While on leave from his Army Unit at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas, 2nd Lt. Andre Welch visited East Street School to thank students for sending hand made holiday cards to his unit while they were deployed with the 1st Armored Division outside of Mosul, Iraq.  Lt. Welch is the son of East Street Principal, Thomas Welch.

“It was a nice surprise for myself and those in my unit to receive the cards from the students at my dad’s school, especially since we were not able to be home for the holidays,” shared Lt. Welch.

Lt. Welch visited several classrooms where students were extremely happy to be able to meet their principal’s son in person.  Many students shared stories of family members who are currently serving in the military, or gave words of support.  1st grader Madelynne Dodd, commented, “It’s really cool that you (Lt. Welch) work with the troops in the army and protect us.”

Lt. Welch said he will be home for a couple of more weeks before heading back to his unit in Texas.
